Former 1982 NZ World Cup Coach John Adshead has accepted the role of coach
for the NZ Seniors International Team to contest the 6th Seniors World Cup
in Chaiyaphum in May-June 2011. In addition the following management team of
Chef de Mission, Bruce Macdonald, Doctor Ian Taylor, who has worked with the
All whites and HB Magpies, Physio Gary Sye, who has worked with both the All
Whites and the All Blacks and Managers David & Lisa Dickinson and John
Cotton.
Chef de Mission Bruce Macdonald believes that the management team's
appointments brings additional prestige to the campaign after the NZ team
finished 6th in 2009, and 2010 when they were losing semi finalist's.
The annual tournament is run by the Thailand Football Association, providing
for International and top players to still compete for a world cup, and is
held in various provinces of Thailand. New Zealand representation has been
sanctioned by Football New Zealand.
The standard of play in this Tournament is naturally of high quality, with
most countries represented by previous National Team members and world cup
representatives. The other seven countries involved in 2010 were Thailand,
Taiwan, Armenia, USA, England, Iran, Australia and New Zealand. 2011 will
see 12 Nations represented. The format is different from a normal Tournament
whereby on the pitch at any one time you have to have a Goalkeeper who must
be aged 38+, 3 players who are aged 38-44, 4 players who are aged 45-49 and
3 players who are aged 50+. Substitutions can be made at any time but must
be of the same age or older, so this makes it a test of team combinations to
ensure that the right age players are correctly subbed.
To prepare ourselves for Thailand we are entering a 35+ Men's team in the
New Zealand Masters Games in Wanganui in February 2011.This will enable the
management team to practice the substitution rule that applies to the 6th
seniors World Cup as well as looking at player combinations and fitness
levels.
Potential squad members have been invited to play in the New Zealand Masters
Games in Wanganui in February 2011.Players who are attending Wanganui
include Gene Granger, Perry Cotton, Paul Halford, Harry Clarke, Noel
Barkley, Kerry Bartlett, Gary Walton, Andy Birchenough, Gary Darkes, Rodger
Gray, Terry Torrens, Mike Horgan Paul Murphy, Max Leason, Dave Hughes, Gary
Lewis plus other quality players yet to confirm.
